Program of Studies

     Dr. Helmut Christoferus Calabrese presents lessons in piano and composition at all levels.   The piano lessons use the Michael Aaron piano series, and the composition lessons are based on the study of counterpoint, form, and orchestration.  The piano lessons consist of an extensive course of study that includes lessons in technique and performance, and lessons that combine technique with melody.  The performance lessons include an overview of classical and popular piano literature. 

    Composition is taught by creating a foundation in the principles of counterpoint and form.  The counterpoint lessons are based on studies in modal species counterpoint.  The lessons in form are based on the analysis of classical musical literature.  The student is required to compose music for various musical ensembles.  The student is encouraged to pursue his or her compositional interests while composing music that will foster the development of their talent.
